Meet the Border Collie

The highly intelligent and energetic Border Collie has recently joined The Breed Archive family.
The Border Collie developed from working collies found across the border regions of England, Scotland and Wales, where terrain, climate and the demands of sheep farming shaped these dogs into the breed we know today. Sheepdog trials, first formally recorded in Wales in 1873, helped showcase exceptional working dogs and their herding abilities. The International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS), founded in 1906, later played a key role in preserving and promoting these working lines.
As Border Collies spread around the world, dedicated working registries were established in other countries to maintain pedigrees and preserve the breed's working abilities. Recognition by major kennel clubs came much later, reflecting the breed’s long-standing focus on working performance rather than appearance in the show ring.
The Border Collie is a medium-sized, athletic dog with a muscular body built for speed, agility and stamina. Its weather-resistant double coat comes in rough or smooth varieties and a wide range of colours and patterns, with black and white remaining the most iconic combination. Its intense “herding eye” is one of the breed’s most recognisable hallmarks.
Known for their remarkable intelligence and responsiveness, Border Collies thrive when given a purpose. They excel in herding, agility, obedience, and many other dog sports. Their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them best suited to active owners who can provide plenty of exercise, training, and engagement.
